The new year started off with a bang, with the Asian cannon focusing its sights squarely on the fixed income markets. The fusillade of tumbling currencies, shaky financial markets, political uncertainties and heightened anxiety among global investors is shattering interest rate barriers in the U.S. and reshaping the outlook for 1998. Although the initial shock has passed, we do not profess to know how dire the Asian quagmire will ultimately become. Surely, what began as a minor irritant in Thailand last spring has mushroomed into something far more serious and far-reaching than anyone had speculated. What’s more, there is no question in our minds that the problem will not dissolve into thin air any time soon.
