Are we there yet? Like bickering children in the back seat, economists, pundits and policy makers are incessantly asking whether the economy is approaching that elusive “turning point” in the ongoing recession. Simply put, the forecasting community remains sharply divided over what stage of the cycle the economy is in. About the only point of agreement is that the rate of descent is slowing. But there is no consensus as to when the downturn will end. Some feel a bottom is near, based on recent promising developments. Some are waiting for the other shoe to drop, sending the economy on to a second leg down that will extend the recession into 2010.
