With the economy blazing through its record-setting ninth year of expansion, it is showing few signs of wear and tear. True, the labor force is stretched to the limit; nine years of uninterrupted employment growth has driven the jobless rate down to a 30 year low and greatly depleted the pool of available workers. But tight labor conditions have hardly been a growth deterrent. Thanks to spectacular gains in worker productivity, real GDP over the past three quarters has shown the strongest increase for a comparable period since the early 1980’s.
