As Yogi said, “it ain’t over till it’s over.” While the 10-year old expansion may yet meet its demise, the fat lady still hasn’t sung her swan song. According to the government’s latest reading, the economy turned in a surprisingly solid performance in the first quarter, growing at a 2 percent annual rate. True, that paled relative to the gangbuster trajectory the economy rode during the tech-hyped days of the late 1990s. But compared to its long-term growth potential of 3-4 percent, things aren’t quite as dire as the doomsayers would have us believe. Indeed, the path is increasingly taking on the look of that muchbeloved “soft landing” instead of the dreaded recession that the Cassandra’s still claim is just around the corner
