It’s hard to put a positive spin on the raft of economic data released over the past several weeks. Not only are the current numbers coming in weaker than expected, but revised data depict an economy that was significantly softer over the past three years than originally thought. Indeed, the revisions take direct aim on one of the more perplexing conundrums in the financial markets, namely the disconnect between the weak stock market and the recovering economy. Based on the new numbers, the market may have had a better handle on the economy than the pundits who pour over the macro statistics on a daily basis.
