Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, and the Federal Reserve can certainly consider itself fortunate that it did not have to make any difficult decisions at this week’s policy meeting. Despite widespread controversy over the Fed’s decision to increase short-term rates in December and its plan for future increases, no one expected it to do anything at its latest policy meeting. The “free pass” could not have come at a more opportune time, as events since its December meeting have only added fuel to the controversy.
